A Powerful Legacy
By Dr Paul Martin (HonDSc), WKA Vice President
Martial arts have always been more than combat techniques—they’re a bridge between cultures, generations, and philosophies.
As a lifelong martial artist and Vice President of the World Kickboxing and Karate Association, I’ve seen firsthand how these ancient disciplines have shaped not only fighters in the ring but also entire genres of film, television, and digital media.
From Bruce Lee to Cobra Kai
The global impact of martial arts on pop culture can’t be overstated. When Bruce Lee exploded onto screens in "Enter the Dragon", he didn’t just show us physical mastery — he gave us a new way to think, move, and live. His legacy still inspires martial artists of all backgrounds.
Then came “The Karate Kid” — a classic that turned backyard Dojos into places of transformation. Mr. Miyagi’s iconic lessons taught more than technique; they taught patience, humility, and growth.
From "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", martial arts became part of childhood worldwide. These stories inspired millions to don a gi, step into a Dojo, and start their own journey.
Video Games & Streaming: The Modern Influence
The influence didn’t stop at TV. Fighting games like "Tekken" and "Street Fighter" brought martial arts styles into the digital age, while shows like “Cobra Kai” revived and reimagined old-school rivalries for a new generation.
Today’s martial arts in media blend authenticity with flair — but it’s not always perfect. The flash gets the spotlight, while the deeper values of respect, perseverance, and inner strength often get left behind.
That’s where the WKA stands strong — championing not just the sport but the spirit.
WKA: Preserving the Soul of the Sport
At the WKA, we work tirelessly to support the real story behind martial arts — a story of unity, personal development, and international connection.
Through tournaments, seminars, and outreach, we give athletes from every background the opportunity to grow — not just as fighters but as role models.
Martial arts in pop culture will continue to evolve, but its roots—honor, respect, and courage—remain the same.
And those are values the world still needs.
If martial arts have inspired you, moved you, or changed your life, I invite you to dive deeper into their true global impact in my new book: “The Legacy.”
It’s a powerful journey through history, icons, unsung heroes, and the rise of an international movement that shaped modern martial arts.
